Characteristics

Aiming at combining translation/interpreting teaching with translation/interpreting practice, our teaching experts have designed a series of progressive training courses with their rich experience in language teaching and translation/interpreting practice.

The courses we offer include translation/interpreting skills, sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in political, technical and commercial subjects, audiovisual translation, commercial, technical, legal and general translation, summary translation of news, introduction to translation theory, professional translation projects, etc.

Leading-edge computer-aided translation software (for instance,  TRADOS), desktop publishing software, image processing and audiovisual processing, as well as office software package, are introduced to our translator/interpreter training programs.

Digital databanks of texts and audiovisual clips, as well as web resources, have been built up for our students so that their can use them extensively in our digital lab in class or after school.

We have employed experienced EFL teachers to provide help to those students who need help to improve their English grammar, reading, listening and speaking proficiency. We have purchased premium EFL teaching and testing software to help them to improve their English as well.

Our department offers a second foreign language (e.g., French) learning opportunity to our students so that they are able to translate/interpret between multiple languages when they graduate.

We have set high threshold of graduation for our students: 280 point in the CSENT test for the two-year college students and 260 points for the four-year college students. They are also required to complete 30,000 words of translation and 60 hours of interpreting after class before they are issued a graduation certificate.

Elite classes will be offered to those who have achieved 280 point in CSNET test with an average of 80 out of 100 in their semester marks. The elite classes during the holiday periods include medical and pharmaceutical translation, patent translation, UN and EU documents translation, and advanced simultaneous interpreting.

Students receive individual help from our staff in class. By peer discussing and evaluation, they will encourage each other to improve their study in translation/interpreting.

Szuyuan Translation Service, a subsidiary of Wenzao, and the Center for Employment Advisory and Internship, provide a great number of opportunities in translation/interpreting practice for our students. We will continue our efforts to interact with both the private and public sectors to find more chances of practice for our students so that they can improve their translation/interpreting skills and get themselves quickly adapted to the working environment of their future career.

The Department of Translation and Interpreting endeavor to expand its contact with universities abroad and establish channels for our student and teacher exchange programs. By adding more overseas study programs to our strategic plan, we hope that our students will enhance their outlook of internationalism.
