Academic Exchanges
  Academic exchanges and interactions with the local industry of translation and interpreting have been actively carried out since the establishment of the Department of Translation and Interpreting (DTI) in August 2005.

2005

10.17

Three professional translators were invited to give speeches on the translation market in Taiwan.

Dr. George Ho, Chair of the DTI of Wenzao, visited the DTI of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and exchanged views with Prof. Tung, Yuan-fang, Chairwoman of the DTI, about translator training.

Dr. Ho visited the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), exchanged views about translator training with Prof. Chai, Ming-jiong, Dean of the GIIT, and attended a class, where a senior Chinese interpreter from the United Nations was training students of the Institute to do simultaneous interpreting in booths.

Professor Yu, Kwang-chung from Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung was invited to give a speech entitled Translation: the Art of Flexibility.

Dr. Ho talked about the goal and development plan of the DTI of Wenzao College on Radio Kaohsiung.

Prof. Wang, Jian-bin of Beijing Foreign Studies University gave a speech on diplomatic interpreting.

Dr. Ho gave a speech entitled Introduction to the Current Situation of the New Zealand Translation Industry and Translator Training Programs in New Zealand at the Department of Applied Languages for Interpretation and Translation, Chang Jung University, Tainan, Taiwan.

     

2006

Dr. Ho visited the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation Studies (GITIS) of Fu Jen Catholic University, being shown the institute's facilities and exchanging views with Prof. Robin Setton, Director of the GITIS.

Dr. Ho talked about the Chinglish problems in translating signs in public areas in Taiwan during an interview with a reporter from the Public Television in Kaohsiung.

Mr. Jerome Su, Managing Director of Bookman Publishing Co. Ltd. and B.K. Norton & Co. and part-time Assistant Prof. of the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation of National Taiwan Normal University was invited to give a speech on How to Improve Your English and Translation Skills.

Dr. Michael Ching-long Lu, Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of ROC made a speech entitled The Diplomatic Work and the Current Situation of International Affairs.

Mr. Luis Roncero, Program Host and Reporter of the Spanish Service of Radio Taiwan International, was invited to make a speech called Major Challenges in Socio-linguistic Translation: the Importance of Context in Chinese Language Interpretation.
